Shell moulding, also known as croning or shell casting, is a foundry technique used by Castmetal Advanced Services to manufacture high-precision metal parts. It combines aspects of traditional sand casting and hot casting. As a result, it produces intricately shaped parts with exceptional dimensional accuracy and a high quality finish.

How Shell moulding works?

The first stage of the Shell moulding process involves creating a model of the part to be manufactured. This model is made of metal and is used to form a strong shell of rigid sand.

Several mould parts are assembled to form the complete rigid mould. This cavity is then filled with molten metal, such as aluminium, bronze or steel, which is poured into the shell by gravity or pressure.

The advantages of Shell moulding:

  • Parts have a high degree of precision and an excellent surface finish.
  • Complex parts can be produced.
  • Parts can be mass-produced.
  • It is a very environmentally-friendly process, with very little material to be recycled.
